John Sommerville BVM&S MRCVS


John was born in Scotland and spent a lot of his childhood on a farm. As a veterinary student, he saw practice at Rae, Bean and Partners. He qualified in Glasgow in 1984 and then worked mainly in Lincolnshire for 5 years.

He joined this practice in 1989 and became a partner in 1993. He has always been interested in horses and farm work and specialises in equine work in the practice. He is married with two children. He follows eventing closely, has one son with an eventing yard and the other is following him to become a vet.

Alan McCormack BVSc MRCVS


Alan was born just outside Belfast, the son of a dairy farmer. He qualified from Liverpool University Vet School in 1985 and has worked in mixed practice in Yorkshire and Derbyshire since then.

He moved to Boroughbridge to work at the practice in 1993 and became a partner in 1995. His main area of expertise is in farm work but enjoys all areas of mixed practice. He is married with two children. Alan enjoys all sports, has retired from playing rugby but still plays golf.

Helen O'Kelly BVSc MRCVS

Helen grew up in Richmond and Bedale and qualified from Liverpool Vet School in 1987. She spent 8 years in mixed practice down south then had twins and moved into pet animal work in 1997. She joined the practice in 2008 as a locum and has been here ever since! Helen enjoys all aspects of Small Animal practice but has special interests in Nutrition, Preventative Health care, Rabbits, Ferrets, Complementary therapies such as Homeopathy (HPTG 2002 Graduate), Laser therapy, (PetTHOR) Dermatology, Rehabilitation and Behaviour. She lives in Easingwold with her family, and is currently BSAVA NE Secretary and on the BSAVA Petsavers Management Committee, but manages to find time to walk her two dogs.

Brian McTague MVB MRCVS

Brian was born in Co. Galway in the west of Ireland, where he spent his youth accompanying his father (a vet too) on calls.

He qualified from UCD, Dublin in 2010 and spent a year and a half working in mixed practice in the southwest of Ireland.

He moved to Boroughbridge in 2012. Brian likes working with any animal on four legs. He also enjoys all kinds of sport especially when Ireland are doing well!

Lorna Roberts BVM BVS MRCVS

Lorna was born here in Yorkshire, growing up with an assortment of pets at home.
She graduated in 2011, as one of the first year through the newest vet school, The University of Nottingham and spent a year working in mixed practice near Birmingham.
Lorna moved to Boroughbridge in June 2012 and is enjoying all aspects of mixed practice.

Liz has worked at the practice since 1998. She has lived in Boroughbridge all her life.

She enjoys horse racing and spending time with her new Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy - 'Jimmy'.

Katy Bielby (and Isla)

Katy studied for a Veterinary Nursing Degree at Harper Adams from 2006-2009. She is a local pig farmer's daughter.

Katy has worked on and off throughout school at Rae, Bean and Partners since 2003. She has 2 horses, spends a lot of time hunting and lives in Langthorpe with her crazy dog Isla.

Jenny Voakes


Jenny studied for an HND Agri at Askham Bryan from 1982-85. She then managed a 200 sow breeding unit for three years.

Jenny joined the practice in 1988. She started working part-time, then spent several years working full-time until she started a family, Jenny returned to working part-time again, mainly on reception.

Sally Throup

Sally is a local farmer's wife and is trained in A.I. She started working at the practice in 2011.

She has three horses and two dogs. Sally enjoys showing her coloured mare and enjoys competing in dressage competitions.

Sue is the practice manager. She started working at the practice in 2000 after working as secretary on a large pig unit for many years.

Sue has two grown up children and 3 grandchildren. In her spare time she enjoys walking and gardening.
